The rumors about the possible arrival of a mixed reality viewer by Apple return to intensify over the next year. According to the well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, of TF International Securities, the viewer of the Cupertino company will be equipped with Wi-Fi 6E support to meet the high bandwidth requirements needed to deliver a better immersive experience. At a later date, there would also be a pair of augmented reality glasses on the way.

The adoption of Wi-Fi 6 and 6E will be a fundamental requirement for this type of device. Even the viewers of Meta, the rebranding of Facebook announced in recent days by Mark Zuckerberg, and of Sony will adopt this data transmission technology. Facebook has already equipped the Oculus Quest 2 with the Air Link module with Wi-Fi 6 which will also arrive on the first generation of the Quest.

Kuo predicts that Meta, Apple and Sony will be the most influential brands in the “metaverse” device market in the course of 2022. The devices of these three companies should arrive, respectively, in the second half, last quarter and second quarter of next year. .

Apple Glass will have to wait until “after 2023”

Wi-Fi 6E, we recall, extends the Wi-Fi 6 standard (also known as 802.11ax) with 14 additional radio channels of 80 MHz each and another 7 of 160 MHz, all bordering on the 6 GHz band that the EU is progressively releasing. The main difference lies in the frequencies used, which allow for greater speed and lower latency. On average, they are possible up to 6x faster speeds and 75% lower latency compared to Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac standard). On the other hand, the higher the frequency, the lower the range and penetration capacity. The Wi-Fi 6E, therefore, only offers maximum performance in open spaces and close distances.

The first rumors about Apple’s AR / VR viewer pointed to a device to be connected wirelessly to an iPhone or another Apple device. In the past, rumors have circulated about the arrival of Wi-Fi 6E already on the iPhone 13. At this point, it is presumable that this technology will be present on the iPhones of the next year. Regarding the type of content that will be offered by Apple, it is believed that they will be streaming video content, video conferencing apps but above all high-quality virtual reality games.
