For the fourth time in a row, the creators of the Postman API platform surveyed developers about the use of their platform and the use of APIs in general.

The San Francisco-based software company Postman offers the platform of the same name, which is intended to support developers in both the administration and the development of APIs. Since 2019, the company has published a report entitled “State of the API”. According to the makers behind this now republished report, 37,332 developers and API experts worldwide were surveyed. In addition, the data was supplemented with anonymous, aggregated data from the Postman API platform.

According to statements by the makers behind the “State of the API” report, one result of this year’s survey was particularly surprising: They wanted to know which factors were decisive for the decision of the respective company to use an API. Respondents very clearly put clarifying how well an API integrates with internal applications and systems at the top of their answers. That’s a big change from last year’s survey, which didn’t even make internal integration a top three.

The Postman specialists explain this shift by saying that companies are increasingly using APIs for interaction within their own organization. They may replace traditional methods such as file transfers, database sharing, and email. This assessment goes hand in hand with the finding that Postman has seen a 20-fold increase in the number of integrated APIs in enterprise teams over the past year.

API usage has skyrocketed over the past few years. Equally clearly, it has been shown that most companies typically use many different types of APIs. Inevitably, the developers also have to take care of API management, which has become essential, not least with regard to the API attack surface.

Not only providers like Postman with their API platform see it that way, but also the analysts from Gartner have already determined in their forecasts for the year 2022 that software developers are increasingly and very quickly pushing the use of APIs.

51 percent of respondents to this year’s Postman Report said more than half of their company’s development effort is spent on APIs. Last year, 49 percent of participants made this statement, compared to just 40 percent in 2020.

When asked what factors are considered before integrating an API, respondents indicated that performance was the most important factor. He just edged out last year’s number one: safety.

When evaluating the State of the API report, it is important to note that Postman sells an API platform. However, the company has built the report on such a broad basis that the results provide interesting insights into the use and distribution of the APIs. If you would like to deal with this rather extensive data yourself, you can download the complete report from the company’s website as a PDF file. It is very pleasant that Postman does not ask for any data (not even an e-mail address) from those interested.
