Android has native split-view multitasking functionality for a few years now. This feature is interesting, mainly due to the emergence of devices with large screens, which proposes a full use of the available space.

Google was even spotted working on App Pairs for Android 12, which would allow you to launch two apps simultaneously in split view. This prototype was never released, but that should change with the release of Android 14.

In a series of tweets, Android analyst Mishaal Rahman revealed that Google added a new launch flag in Android 14 beta 2 that allows the option to “save a pair of apps”. This is hidden in the split-screen contextual menu in the recent apps view.

Currently, enabling the hidden flag does nothing, indicating that the feature is not yet ready for testing. But, when available, the user will be able to configure this and create a shortcut on home screen to directly launch two apps in split screen mode.

More than phones, app pairing functionality will come in handy on the Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet. Their large screens provide an ideal amount of space for multitasking with multiple apps at the same time.

Samsung already offers a similar App Pair feature on its flagship Galaxy S and Tab devices. Even Microsoft offers similar functionality in its Surface Duo lineup. So once Google releases App Pair, it will simply update a feature that Samsung has been offering in its phones for years.
