AMD seems to have confirmed that it will launch processors with hybrid architecture for notebooks. After rumors that the manufacturer was developing a new design to compete with ARM, a new entry in its open source platform ROCm suggests the launch of a new line known as “Phoenix 2”.

The name found in the ROCm indicates that AMD is preparing a second version of the Ryzen 7000 “Phoenix” processors. A document published on February 7 suggests that the new line will have “performance cores” and “efficiency cores” — similar to ARM architecture and 13th generation Intel Core processors.

A hybrid design could allow the brand’s processors to become even more efficient, as they could allocate background tasks to cores with lower power consumption. This technology would be ideal for notebook processors, in addition to the new platforms for handheld consoles in the Ryzen Z line.

Intel uses different architectures for its hybrid design: “Raptor Cove” on high-performance cores and “Gracemont” on low-power cores. AMD, in turn, should only use the Zen 4 architecture in its new “Phoenix 2” line, and the low-power cores will be distinguished by the reduced clock rate and smaller cache.

The launch date of the new processors is still a mystery. Although the documents that prove their existence are accessible by anyone, the manufacturer has not yet publicly commented on these products.

The first devices equipped with the new generation of AMD processors are starting to appear on the market in the form of gaming notebooks. Although the debut of these products has been delayed, preliminary tests indicate that the Ryzen 7040 “Phoenix” is much more efficient than models in the Ryzen 6000 line with Zen 3+.
