Europe has published a list of 19 online platforms that must comply with the new algorithmic transparency and accountability rules that will be introduced with the Digital Services Act (DSA). The list includes tech giants like Facebook, Google, Amazon, TikTok, and Twitter, as well as other popular platforms like Airbnb, Booking.com, eBay, and Spotify.

The DSA is a legislative proposal of the European Commission that aims to regulate the digital single market and ensure that Internet services respect the fundamental rights of users and companies. Among other measures, the DSA will require platforms to regularly report on systemic risks posed by their algorithmic systems, such as misinformation, hate speech, election rigging or discrimination.

Platforms listed will have to provide detailed information about the design, operation and impact of their algorithms, as well as about the measures they adopt to mitigate the risks identified. They will also have to make their data and interfaces accessible to independent researchers and competent authorities. In addition, they will have to establish effective mechanisms for notification and removal of illegal or harmful content, as well as recourse for affected users.

From the point of view of users, this regulation and control it will benefit you in many ways. Without going any further, these companies must provide clear information about the recommendations they make and also the way to “flee” from those personalized recommendations. For example, the European Commission already communicated to Twitter last November of the great work ahead of them to comply with all the requirements of the new legislation.

The list will be updated every two years. or when there are significant changes in the market.

DSA not yet entered into force, since it is pending the approval of the European Parliament and the Council of the EU. The legislative process is expected to be completed by the end of 2023 or beginning of 2024. Once adopted, the DSA will be directly applicable in all EU Member States.

Of course, it is expected that a grace period will be applied to all these companies due to the great work they have ahead of them to comply with the new and demanding standards of Europe. As we have commented, some have more work than others (as in the case of Twitter), but all of them must put their batteries to avoid possible sanctions or bans at the European level.
