A16 Bionic in the first Geekbench results: there is an improvement but it is not surprising

The new iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max are the only new top of the Apple range to equip the SoC A16 Bionicsince iPhone 14 and 14 Plus make use of the same A15 Bionic with 5-core GPU we saw in action last year on the iPhone 13 Pro (our review) and 13 Pro Max (review here).

Many have turned up their noses in front of the return of a chip that, although still incredibly powerful, has already been used on the models of the previous year, especially now that the price of the iPhone 14 starts at just over 1,000 euros for the basic variant. 128 GB. But what are the real differences between the two chips? Is A16 Bionic Really That More Powerful?

To answer these questions it will be necessary to have at least iPhone 14 Pro or Pro Max in your hands, since now the performance of the SoC must be evaluated in the round, not giving weight exclusively to the power of a single sector. However, not having this chance yet, all we have left is to take a look at the first Geekbench CPU tests of the new A16 Bionic, posted on Twitter by the well-known insider Ice Universe.

The score that emerged shows us a decent step forward as regards the value in single core, given that the A16 Bionic reaches altitude 1,879 points, against the usual 1,700 of the A15 Bionic. Almost zero differences regarding the multi-core sector, given that the 4,664 points of the A16 are very similar to the 4,660 that an A15 Bionic achieves on averagealthough it is good to remember that this sector tends to vary a lot according to the conditions in which the test is performed, so there is the possibility that that of A16 is actually one of the lowest scores that the SoC is capable of.

In any case, we are talking about a very limited generational leap as regards the CPU sector, which over the years has become increasingly marginal precisely due to the integration of coprocessors (ISP, Neural Engine and so on) that deal with autonomously manage tasks more effectively. At the moment, however, we can be sure that the performance gap between the iPhone 14 Pro and the base 14 will not be noticeable at all in everyday useand the same will also apply to last generation iPhones.
