A small population of blue prawns discovered in Ohio after 45 years of research

After 45 years of research in Ohio, in the United States, one was discovered small family of blue prawns. The first crustaceans (Cambarus monongalensis) of this color discovered in the region, with other populations and related species existing in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Kentucky, Virginia, Tennessee and North Carolina.

In fact, researchers have been sieving the Ohio River since 1975. The small population found in Monroe County is thought to have crossed the area before the continental ice age and the formation of the river about 2 million years ago. The prawns (which can have an incredible view) were traced on May 19, 2020, as part of an expedition led by Laura S. Hughes who had spent several years researching the species as part of a scientific project.

A colorful crayfish species has just been discovered in eastern Ohio“wrote the Ohio Wildlife Division in a Facebook post.”Researchers have been collecting crayfish in eastern Ohio in search of blue crayfish since 1975. On May 19, an expedition led by Laura S. Hughes found a small population of the species in Monroe County.

This elusive creature had hidden in the springs and crevices of the hills, making it difficult to find. Unfortunately, this exposes them to a greater risk of changes in groundwater conditions. The team’s next step now is to document the total range of the blue crayfish and determine its conservation status within Ohio.
