A Rocky-style statue of Irish boxing legend Katie Taylor could be coming to Dublin city after a councillor promised to bring a motion forward on it.

The Bray boxing world champion beat Amanda Serrano in a historic bout in the prestigious Madison Square Garden last month.

The fight was dubbed as the biggest woman’s boxing match ever and has changed the sport forever.

Fine Gael Councillor James Geoghegan believes Dublin City should celebrate her achievements with a statue.

He told The Irish Sun: “I can think of no more deserving person for a statue in the city centre of Dublin than Katie – to celebrate her contribution not just to Ireland but to the whole world.

“I intend to put down a motion in Dublin City Council to see can we support this initiative.”

He added: “I know there is a statue to Sonia O‚ÄôSullivan in Cobh which would be an example of a statue to a living person.”

It comes as Olympic gold boxer Kellie Harrington was been nominated for the Freedom of Dublin City award.

Lord Mayor Alison Gilliland nominated the Portland Row Powerhouse at Monday night’s full meeting of Dublin City Councillors.

LGBT activist Ailbhe Smyth and Professor Mary Aiken were also announced as nominees for the award.

If the nominations are ratified by Councillors, which they almost always are, they will join the ranks of other high profile recipients such as Bono, Jim Gavin, Dr Tony Holohan and Brian O’Driscoll.
