The couple is rescued after falling 90 meters with their vehicle. Thanks to the SOS satellite calls of the iPhone 14. A recent breakthrough in Apple devices has saved the life of a couple whose car fell almost 100 meters off a cliff.
The Hyundai Elantra of Cloe Fields and Christian Zelada lost grip on the gravel on the shoulder of the Angeles Crest Freeway in California and plunged down a 300-foot-deep canyon. Luckily, the couple did not suffer serious injuries.
While Zelada thought about walking through the forest to safety, Fields thought about how to call for help in an area without cell phone service.
However, upon finding Field’s iPhone 14 just meters from the accident, they learned that the device, mangled but still operational, it had already detected that they had suffered an accident and showed them an option to make an emergency call through the SOS satellite services.
After making this call, they were rescued by helicopter by local emergency services within 30 minutes.
Sergeant John Gilbert, coordinator of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Montrose Search and Rescue team, said it was the first time they had to launch a search and rescue operation following an 911 call from an iPhone.
When we have vehicles that go off the road, in that specific part of the road… usually it is a fatality.
Apple technology is going to change the rules of the game. There are many incidents where we are an hour or hour and a half behind the original emergency before we are even notified.
The iPhone 14 and 14 Pro come with the SOS emergency service via satellite that is free for two years after the activation of either device, although it is only available in some countries at the moment. Next year it will be extended to other regions.
In addition, they also include automatic accident detection that calls the emergency services on your behalf if the device detects that you have been in a serious car accident or fall and do not respond.
