For 500 euros you get either a discarded high-end mobile phone or a brand new middle-class phone. Our test shows that both have their appeal.

On average, Germans spend around 500 euros on a new smartphone – there are lots of interesting models for the money. Some even bring high-end features with them, but still only cost half as much as the luxury cell phones. But the 1000 euro smartphones from the previous year that have fallen in price are also in this price range. Are they perhaps the better choice?

We asked four current 500 euro smartphones to meet, which represent the diversity of this price range. There are also two high-end smartphones from last year that we bought used. That Xiaomi Poco F4 GT forms the performance gold standard of the current 500-euro smartphones Pixel 6a from Google combines a great camera with long support. That Nothing Phone (1) proves that not every smartphone has to look the same, and that honor 70 completes the quartet of newcomers. That works for the used ones Samsung Galaxy S21 5G and the Sony Xperia 5 III at the start, both presented last year. The former scores with an unusually long software support, the latter with an equipment list that is unique for the upper class (apart from other Sony smartphones) with a jack, expandable memory and notification LED.

We bought the Sony Xperia 5 III from Zoxs in “very good” condition and it was indistinguishable to the naked eye from an unused new device. Our S21, which we bought from Rebuy, reached us badly battered, covered with fine scratches, including a deeper one on the display – but we explicitly didn’t choose “very good” condition. We have already highlighted our experiences with the purchase of used smartphones and the legal framework at another site.
