The evolution of the connections with which we can enjoy the Internet in our homes has not stopped at any time. Over the years we have been seeing how the different companies continued to tirelessly develop new projects to be able to reach higher speeds. If a few years ago it was unthinkable to have 10 Gbps fiber in our homes. Now, 1000 Gbps fiber is a reality.
At the moment, it has only been tested. But, each time there is less so that we can get to have up to 100 Gbps speed at home. In this case, it is paid by Nokia and e&, since both companies have been in charge of testing the first fiber broadband with such high speeds.
Fiber test with 100 Gbps
Nokia continues to take leaps and bounds towards 100 Gbps fiber. and it is that, so far this year, the company of Finnish origin, has already tested different projects on more than one occasion to test whether it was possible to reach these speeds with fiber optics. In any case, it has once again managed to exceed the speed limit of fiber.
For this occasion, in collaboration with etisalat by e&, they have carried out the test with 100 Gbps PON prototype, developed by its Bell Labs division. With this, it becomes the first choice in the world to have flexible speed transmission in a PON network. In this demonstration, which was carried out in the Middle East and Africa region, speeds of up to 100 Gbps per second were achieved in a single wavelength, being four times faster than the highest speed networks today.
Furthermore, to carry out this test, achieving 100 Gb/s on a single wavelength, Nokia Bell Labs used a advanced technique of digital signal processing (DSP) that he already put to the test in June of this year. From the Finnish company they make it clear that ‘flexible speed transmission works by grouping fiber modems (ONU) that exhibit similar physical network characteristics’. And not only this, but they have made data transmission more efficient.
Another important finding from this test is that the use of flexible rate transmission has also resulted in better latency in a PON network and has been achieved cut energy consumption in half.
The commercialization of the 100 gigabytes
Throughout this year we have already seen how Nokia has been testing 100 Gbps in different parts of the world and with different telecommunications companies. On this occasion, it has gone hand in hand with etisalat by e&although in February 2021 we already saw it collaborating with Vodafone in order to achieve these speeds with fiber.
Therefore, there is less left for the commercialization of fiber with 100 Gbps. Specifically, from Nokia they point out that the 100G PON prototype (which they have been testing in recent months) could be commercially available from 2030.
